Presentation

The DIR Atlantic, a decentralised department of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion (MTECT), is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 628 km of motorways and non-concession national roads. The DIRA employs nearly 400 agents who, on a daily basis, carry out assignments to protect users in difficulty and manage traffic, as well as implementing an annual maintenance programme for the infrastructure and its road works, including the Aquitaine Bridge, and modernising the network, either through construction work or improvements to its assets.

The DIRA's road network crosses 6 departments in the Nouvelle Aquitaine region: Charente, Charente-Maritime, Gironde, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne. This network carries a high volume of transit traffic on the Atlantic arc, comprising the RN10 from Poitiers, the Bordeaux ring road and the A63 as it leaves the ring road to the south.

Projects / Use Cases

The DIRA’s commitment to C-ITS projects is designed to contribute to the development of tomorrow’s mobility, with a connected road serving the safety of both users and its agents.

The DIRA has equipped the entire Bordeaux ring road and its two main access roads (A63 and A62) with some 40 roadside units in order to test the direct transmission of information relating to events that the connected vehicles are likely to encounter on their route: intervening DIRA vehicle, road works or accident zone, presence of a broken down vehicle, a vehicle on fire, a pedestrian or an animal on the road.

Timeline

In 2024, the DIRA is continuing to deploy its roadside units on the RN10 with the installation of around 20 RSUs as part of the European InDiD project (2020-2024).
