Presentation
SNCF is one of the world's leading passenger transport and freight logistics groups, with the management of the French rail network at its heart, generating €34.8 billion in revenue in 2021, a third of which is international. Present in 120 countries, the Group employs 270,000 people, including 208,000 in France, more than half of whom work in its core rail business.
Working alongside its customers (passengers, local authorities, shippers as well as railway undertakings concerning SNCF Réseau) in the heart of the territories, the Group relies on its expertise in all the components of railway services, and more generally in all transport services, to provide a simple, fluid and sustainable response to all their mobility needs.
Within the SNCF Group, the Group Technologies, Innovation and Projects Division is preparing the future of the rail system. To this end, its teams are piloting various projects, one of which aims to transform the level crossing into a "connected intersection" with road users and their vehicles.
Projects / Use Cases
The solution retains the operation of the level crossing, while adding a driver assistance service. A roadside unit (RSU) is added to encode the messages and GPS, 4G and G5 antennae are added to transmit the messages.
As part of the C-Roads project, the aim is to inform users of a connected vehicle or of the Coopits application about the status of the road (i.e. whether it is open, closed, in disarray or under construction) and also about its characteristics in terms of height, width, tonnage, speed or road profile limits.
As part of the InDiD project, the level crossing roadside unit is being upgraded to send map messages in addition to the status of the crossing. The aim is to help the automated/autonomous vehicle cross the level crossing safely.
