In partnership with a number of local authorities in Brittany, DIRO has been involved in pilot projects for collaborative intelligent transport systems since 2014. As a partner in the Scoop, C-Roads, InDid and, most recently, Scale projects, DIRO has deployed more than 160 on-board systems in patrol and emergency response vehicles across all its maintenance and emergency response centres:

It has also installed around 100 roadside units across part of its network:

DIRO can use these new technologies to enhance the road information it provides to users: traffic conditions, road hazards and roadworks. Furthermore, these new communication channels should eventually enable a road authority such as DIRO to encourage motorists to combine car use with other modes of transport.

Specifically, DIRO is developing the following use cases: Road temporarily slippery (D1), Animal and pedestrian on the road warning (D2), Road obstacle warning (D3), Stopped vehicle warning (D4), Accident warning (D5), Reduced visibility warning (D6), Wrong-way vehicle warning (D7), Unmanaged obstruction warning (D8), On-board variable message sign (C3), Information on scheduled roadworks (B1), information on the position of a road authority vehicle approaching / on patrol / responding to an incident (B2), Information on adverse weather conditions (E6) and Congestion warning (E7).

This set of use cases will be updated during the Scale project to reflect developments in technology and systems. It will also be expanded to include new use cases, such as variable message signs transmitted from a management vehicle (B7).
