Hérault Department
Presentation
The Hérault Department, as the managing body for 4,500 km of departmental roads and 160 km of greenways, has been implementing an innovation policy for many years.
As such, the Hérault Department is a signatory to the Mobility Infrastructure Stakeholders’ Commitment Pact led by the Institute for Roads, Streets and Mobility Infrastructure (IDRRIM). Consequently, it has committed to align its infrastructure and mobility systems with the ecological, climate and digital transitions.
The development of road hardware that enables communication between vehicles, infrastructure and road authorities has seen major advances in recent years and now requires the initiation of on-site trial phases.
It is within this framework that the Department has joined the European SCALE project, with the primary aim of improving safety for vulnerable road users, strengthening the protection of its engineering structures and, more generally, preparing infrastructure for the vehicles of tomorrow.

As part of the SCALE project, the Hérault Department has committed to develop the following three use cases: warning vehicles of the risk of collision when approaching an intersection between a road and a cycle path (I8a), warning vulnerable road users of the risk of collision when approaching an intersection between a cycle path and a road (I8b), and warning of restrictions related to a bridge’s weight limit (D16).
Once developed and tested, the next step will be to equip the selected sites so the use cases can be deployed in the field, thereby tangibly improving user safety.
Finally, CD34 is fulfilling a pilot role for the south-east of France, for the group of partners (DirMed and Toulon Provence Mediterranean Metropolitan Area) who will be trialling other C-ITS use cases relating to vulnerable road users.
