Presentation

Located 40 km east of Lyon, Transpolis is a testing centre specialising in road mobility. The Fromentaux site, its main test facility, is a former military camp that was completely refurbished in the late 2010s to provide a wide range of road configurations that are particularly well-suited to testing connected and automated vehicles in real-world conditions and in complete safety. The test centre is equipped with an extensive on-site network (fibre optic and electricity) with more than 60 access points spread across all the test tracks, as well as a 4G/5G mast (MEC on request). Several tracks can be used to conduct various types of experiments: 

  • A 1 km-long motorway track, 5 lanes wide in the southern section and the equivalent of 9 lanes in the northern section, which can be used to test high-speed scenarios. 
  • A country road track, a network of two-lane roads with various types of road markings and a variety of bends, which can be used to evaluate scenarios involving secondary road configurations. 
  • A 1.3 km-long ‘crossing’ track with an intersection at its centre, which can be used to test Euro NCAP scenarios. 
  • A 30-hectare urban test track comprising around forty buildings, four neighbourhoods, two wide boulevards, streets, pavements and a ring road, which can be used to reproduce a very wide range of urban conditions, including varied and modular intersections, pavements, configurable street lighting, etc.
  • Three crash test areas linked by two long straight sections of more than 750 metres, which can be used to conduct crash tests on road infrastructure on various types of ground. 

Transpolis has two ISO 17025-accredited test laboratories: the first specialises in crash tests on road infrastructure such as safety barriers and anti-intrusion devices, while the second focuses on vehicle testing, with particular expertise in the validation of driver assistance systems and automated and connected vehicles. Transpolis is also a technical service recognised by the CNRV (the French vehicle certification authority) to carry out official system approvals. In 2025, Transpolis also became an official Euro NCAP laboratory for dynamic safety testing.

Projects / Use Cases

Participation in a number of collaborative projects and working groups, including:

  • C-ROADS: pilot site for the GLOSA use case, hosting test campaigns for the deployment of services (e.g. on-board variable message signs, on-lane operators).
  • PRISSMA: validation and approval method for automated vehicles incorporating artificial intelligence. Study of the cybersecurity of connected systems.
  • Connectivity workgroup of the Directorate-General for Infrastructure, Transport and Mobility: participation in defining priority connectivity requirements to automate road vehicles.

A wide range of use cases can be tested at Transpolis, including:

Functional tests:

  • Navigation assistance: GLOSA, information message for vehicles, alerts of work in progress on the road, etc.
  • Cooperative driving: vehicle priority at intersections, collision risk warning (lateral or longitudinal), detection of vulnerable road users, etc.
  • Synchronised driving: V2X as a perception tool acting directly on vehicle dynamics.

Performance tests:

    • Signal quality (LOS / NLOS scenarios, interference, jamming) and their impact on functional scenarios.

Participation in SCALE
Within the SCALE project, Transpolis is part of the Centre-East pilot site and its main contribution lies within WP2 as the lead validation entity. In this capacity, during the specification phases, Transpolis leads discussions on methods for validating new use cases and new C-ITS equipment. The validation guide will be drafted based on the results of this work. The pilot sites will then implement these recommendations during the validation phases. Transpolis will oversee the various validation stages, from unit tests conducted by URCA to end-to-end tests managed by CEREMA. Transpolis is also heavily involved in WP3, which focuses on defining certification sites, and will also participate in WP1.

Timeline
